Marie François Xavier Bichat (1771-1802) was a French anatomist and pathologist; he was the earliest 19th century exponent of anatomy and scientific medicine in France, and is regarded as the father of histology and descriptive anatomy. He died with only the first two volumes in this set published; the other three were published posthumously.
