Agnes M. Clerk was born in Skibbereen, County Cork, in 1842. Classically educated by her parents at home, she began writing on astronomy at the age of 15. In addition to her own works, she contributed numerous entries to the Dictionary of National Biography and the Encyclopaedia Britannica (for which she worte the main article on the history of astronomy in the 11th edition).
